Are You Still Advertising?

What is advertising? According to Webster’s Dictionary, to advertise is “to draw public attention to.” Advertising should focus or draw attention to your product or service and explain what makes it unique from your competitors. Identify what makes your service perfect for your client’s needs in your advertisements.

newspaper advertisingSmall business owners can use different mediums to advertise their product or service. Newspaper, magazine, radio, or billboard may come to mind when considering traditional ways to get the word out. All of which may be good options for your business but do not limit yourself. I know with the current economy, business owners have to carefully think and re-think where every dollar is going. Do not let “the times” stop you from advertising. Use this frustration as your motivation. Now is the time to find new and innovative ways to do so.

  • Look to the internet for free advertising sources like Craigslist or YouTube. Post an advertisement in the services section of Craigslist or make a promotional video on YouTube.
  • Another option is to participate in social networking. And when I say participate, that is what I mean…engage others. Linkedin, Facebook or Twitter are only a few examples of the many social networking platforms that are available. This option may not be for all small business owners because it not about a hard sell. The premise behind social networking is not to directly sale your service but to be an active and trusted participant that may pique the interest of potential clients.
  • My final suggestion is to consider bartering your services for ad space or time. If you know of a fellow business owner that could use your service or vice versa, reach out to them. This is an economical way to help you both grow your business.
